Musical Theater Certificate [30-36 credit]

This certificate program focuses studies on the three disciplines of theater performance; music, dance and basic acting techniques.  The course work comprises of training that develops student skills to a deeper level.  It provides a basic foundation by which students can move forward to join the theater workforce, or further their studies with an Associate degree of their chosen focus.

Program Learning Outcomes

  • Develop a historical and sociological perspective of musical theater through listening, viewing and reading selected musical theater repertoire.
  • Identify key individuals in the field of musical theater and describe their contributions to the field.
  • Identify and analyze important works in the field of musical theatre in terms of musical elements as well as historical and sociological context.
  • Perform in the different genres of musical theatre.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the discipline required to work in musical theatre.
  • Develop a unique performance or production style to begin the development of an approach to their work that will guide them through their careers.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the techniques and knowledge to compete in the musical theatre field to be able to continue their training in a professional college or studio‐based acting program.
  • Display knowledge of the business of musical theatre, including the various resources available for finding work.
  • Prepare at least three audition pieces and strengthened their sight reading skills in order to present professionally at auditions.
