This 300-hour comprehensive course, will provide instruction for entry level employment as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (ChPT) within the healthcare industry. This program focuses on employment in healthcare facilities (hospitals or long term care), direct order pharmacies and/or pharmaceutical companies. Retail pharmacy employment is also an option for graduates of this program.

Course includes: Role of pharmacy technician; healthcare environments; legal and ethical considerations; associated medical terminology; anatomy and physiology; metric system; drug calculation; adult and pediatric common drugs; drug interactions, drug storage and disposal.

Laboratory sessions are required during this program and include skills competencies and testing.  Required skills include:  reading, filling and labeling prescriptions; sterile compounding and aseptic technique; preparing parental medications; Automated Dispensing System control and maintenance; Laminar Flow Hood utilization and maintenance; IV additives. 

Program fee includes the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)  Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination (PTCE), required textbooks; laboratory fees, supplies and required lab coat.  

Prerequisites: HS Diploma/GED. Strong math and reading skills are required. Some students may be required to participate in a pre-course math assessment to determine program readiness.

** Clinical Rotation Internship Program is available and is optional for qualified students.  Clinical rotation areas include: healthcare facilities, direct order and corporate pharmacies.  This rotation requires a complete physical examination, immunizations, criminal background check and NJ Registration as a pharmacy technician. Clinical rotation dates for this section will be determined after course session is completed and will be 160 hours (8 hrs/day x 4 weeks).  Student eligibility guidelines will be discussed on the first day of class.
