Adult Basic Education and High School Equivalency Preparation

BCC's Adult Basic Education includes The High School Equivalency (HSE) program.   Adults who did not complete a formal high school program the opportunity to certify their attainment of high school-level academic knowledge and skills by preparing for and passing an HSE test.


Current Course Offerings are below:


HSE Academic Skills (AL-511) – A 9-week course to review reading, writing, math and practice test-taking techniques.  Students are introduced to the writing process through such techniques as brainstorming, using graphic organizers, and self- and peer-editing.  Math lessons build number sense and problem-solving skills, focusing on the uses of math in everyday life. M-TH (Fee: $405.00)


Math for HSE and Beyond (AL-530)-  An 18-day refresher course that builds knowledge of math basics and problem-solving strategies.  An emphasis on mathematical thinking and many uses of math in everyday and professional careers is taught. M/W (Fee: $295.00)


HSE Preparation Course (AL-531)– A 9-week multi-skills course geared toward the High School Equivalency test.  Emphasis is placed on the literacy portion, which stresses academic reading and writing strategies, critical thinking and strategies for success on the essay portion.  Other content areas of Math, Social Studies and Science are covered. M-TH (Fee: $405.00)
